Larian Studios Reveal a Latest Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The speculation about The Game Awards has been intense, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a audacious trailer packed with striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This distinction hints that the team could be crafting a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it sparked the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and flexible progression—traits that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable with a distinct build with a unique decision path.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, enabling players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, players can get ready for another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
